The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Master of Arts (MA) in Teaching prepares you to become an elementary, middle, or secondary school art teacher who is deeply engaged in contemporary visual culture, social justice, and community-based change.

Critical Citizenship

SAIC’s MA in Teaching program teaches you to cultivate critical citizenship and social engagement in your students. You will learn to interpret and teach art and visual culture while empowering your students and fostering their meaningful participation in democratic life. Our program emphasizes activism, advocacy, egalitarianism, professionalism, and social responsibility.

Curricular and Extracurricular Experiences

The MA in Teaching curriculum incorporates cultural production, assessment, evaluation, and pedagogical methods. You will expand your critical skills, creative production, and experience through curriculum development, fieldwork, and research. You will also choose electives in advanced art and design history, studio art, or art and design analysis.
